What the law requires
Part-worn tyres are legal in the UK, but the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 (as amended) set clear conditions on selling them. A part-worn tyre must:
- · be permanently and legibly marked PART-WORN in capital letters at least 4mm high;
- · carry an approval (E) mark or equivalent;
- · have been inspected for structural defects — exposed cords or ply, bulges, and cuts or tears beyond the legal limits make a tyre unsellable;
- · have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre;
- · never be sold with a temporary repair, or with sidewall or shoulder damage.
Every part-worn tyre we supply has been checked against these requirements. If it doesn't meet them, we don't sell it.
Sizes we're asked for most
Part-worn tyres are available in the sizes that come off the road every day. These are the ones customers ask for most often — but it's always worth asking, even if yours isn't listed:
Your size is printed on the tyre sidewall as width / profile R rim, for example 205/55 R16. Brands vary from one delivery to the next, so ask us what's in stock rather than for a specific make.

Common questions
Part-worn tyres, answered.
Are part-worn tyres legal in the UK?
Yes, when they meet the legal requirements. Under the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 (as amended), a part-worn tyre must be permanently marked PART-WORN, carry an approval mark, have been inspected for structural defects, and meet the legal tread depth. Temporary repairs are not permitted, and damage to the sidewall or shoulder cannot be sold.
How much tread do part-worn tyres have?
Every part-worn tyre we sell has at least the legal minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre — in practice most of ours have considerably more. Ask us for the tread depth on any specific tyre and we'll tell you before you buy.
Can you tell me the size of my tyres?
Yes. Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall in the format 205/55 R16 — width, profile and rim diameter. If you'd rather not crawl around the car, give us your registration and we'll look up the correct size for your vehicle when we call you back.
Do you guarantee a particular brand or that tyres are in stock?
No — part-worn stock comes and goes daily, so we never promise a brand or availability online. We'll check what we have, tell you exactly what it is, and you decide whether it suits you. If nothing fits the bill, we'll quote you on new tyres instead.
Can I have part-worn tyres fitted at either depot?
Yes — both our Oxford and Bicester depots stock part-worn tyres and fit them. Choose the depot that suits you when you send your enquiry.
Is a part-worn tyre right for me?
They're a sensible choice when you need to get back on the road on a tight budget, or want to match a tyre on an older car. They aren't the right answer if you need a specific brand, a matched set of premium tyres, or if the tyre you're replacing failed for a reason that a part-worn can't fix — we'll say so honestly.
Need tyres today?
Part-worn stock moves quickly — ringing the depot with your tyre size is the fastest way to find out what's available right now.
